Day -3 - 04/Jan/24 - Flying to Atlanta, Georgia
We're headed back to Antarctica after being there in November, 2023 while on the 73 day Grand South America (GSA) voyage. If you'd like to read about that trip, the link is https://timmer2023gsa.blogspot.com.
So why are we going back so soon? The short answer is because we can. Seriously, Holland America made such a great offer, we decided a redux was in order so we can possibly reach the Falklands to see the King penguins. That port was missed due to weather on the GSA. This trip we'll be there in their summer which should allow us to get deeper into Antarctica and closer to the penguins and hopefully better weather. While this trip is only 22 days, the route for this voyage is similar to the comparable section of the GSA except we don't visit Castro and Robinson Crusoe Island in Chile. But we do add Puerto Montt and Chacabuca, Chile as well as Puerto Madryn, Argentina (home to a large penguin colony).
To reach the embarkation port of San Antonio, Chile, we first fly from Seattle to Atlanta. Normally we fly standby, but with what looked to be a nearly full flight, we purchased seats with miles. We'll transfer to Delta for the next flight to Santiago. There's about 3 hour gap between flights.
I'll next do an update once we reach San Antonio unless something surprising happens first.
